Planning a castle visit in the UK?

You have come to the right place

Welcome to my About page

I am Charlotte and I run Discover Castles, a practical travel guide for people who want to visit castles, stay in castles, or even get married in one.

If you are planning a family day out, a UK trip from overseas with castle visits in mind, a weekend away, or a venue-hunt with a difference, you’re in the right place.

My goal is simple: I want to help you choose the right castle and plan your visit without the hassle. Be inspired by your castle visit, come back for more castle adventures and bring back a few keepsakes along the way.

Discover Castles is a travel website on all things castles in Britain and I want to take you to some of the most delightful castles in England, Scotland and Wales.

Your next Castle Adventure starts here

I have organised this site around points of interest visitors most often want to know about:

Some trips call for more than a quick visit. In the Castle Stays section you will find inspiration for places where you can sleep in a medieval castle or stay very close to one. Make it wonderful for a romantic night away or an extra special occasion.

Ever thought of staying in a haunted castle? Kids might be in their element and maybe adults too.

A quick note on “why trust this site?”

I’m not an academic historian — and Discover Castles isn’t written like a textbook. It’s a travel guide built for real visitors.

What I do bring is focus and consistency. I research each castle carefully and use official castle website information for accuracy.

When I visit a castle in person I take my own notes and photos whilst also having a wonderful time exploring. The views I express on this website are entirely my own and I would encourage you to form your own opinion about your castle visit.

How Discover Castles started

My love of castles goes back to childhood in Austria, where castle trips were a regular part of life and a passion for castles and ancient monuments took hold.

I started a career in the airline industry. By then I had moved to England which I now call my second home and you may have guessed it. I suddenly found myself living in Castle Country.

Travel was always part of my world — but over time I found myself returning to castles again and again: for the history, the setting, and the way each one told its own fascinating story.

And then I had an idea. Why not build a website that puts castles at the centre but keeps the content practical, current and fun.

After all, what's not to like about a castle visit? Let your imagination run wild and throw yourself back in time with knights in shining armour, scary castle dungeons, romantic turrets and towers, ghosts at every turn.

In 2020, after Covid and redundancy, I finally had the push, and the time, to build Discover Castles properly — the kind of focused guide I wished was around when planning my own visits.
